Die Gemeinde ist einer der berühmtesten Kurorte und Wintersportplätze der Welt. 1928 und 1948 wurden hier Olympische Winterspiele abgehalten. Der Ort ist nach dem heiligen Mauritius benannt, der auch im Gemeindewappen abgebildet ist.
The municipality is one of the most famous health resorts and winter sports resorts in the world. The Winter Olympics were held here in 1928 and 1948. The place is named after Saint Mauritius, who is also depicted in the municipal coat of arms.
